King Matthew (he/him)
(MATH-you dar-DEN)
SCA Lineage
Squire of Duke Kenric aet Essex, who was Squire to Master Beowulf Wyrmclaw tha Meerstapa, who was Squire to Duke Lucan von Drachenklaue, who was Squire to Master Feral von Halstern, called “Kingmaker”
Persona
England, 1084: Matthew D’Arden (later “The Elder,” “The Wise,” or “The Less-Spicy”) is born
While Matthew’s Norman Grandfather was away on his travels with the Lord of Sicily, alternately protecting and sacking Rome, he left his wife and children in the safety of England. However, his daughter was wooed by the son of a dispossessed Saxon lord.
Upon his return to England, Grandfather chased off his Saxon son-in-law and forced his daughter into a nunnery, but now had to tolerate his half-Saxon grandson. Matthew has been trying to earn his grandfather’s approval ever since.
From youth to adulthood, Matthew was in the contingent his well-traveled Grandfather, through the Holy Lands, the Baltics, and the Italian Peninsula.
On Their meeting…
Matthew had returned to England to tend to the household at his Grandfather’s request, but was called to battle by the King in a local skirmish.
While tending the wounded on a smoldering battlefield, Fiamuin is brought to Matthew’s blood covered body. Though mostly not his own blood, his arm did protrude at a strange angle. Through her skills and ministrations, the arm loudly returned to its intended place, and a love affair was born.
While a Norman and an Anglo-Saxon marriage was not rare, once they were married Matthew and Fiamuin developed their own paths through the differences in the cultures. Matthew taught Fiamuin the ways of the nobility, and she taught him that in her culture woman are near equal companions to men. She assisted in his campaigns, and tended the household when he traveled to war, and she continued her ministrations as a Wise Woman.

(FEE-a-min KAR-man)

Persona
England, 1215: Fiamuin is born on the outskirts of Chelmsford, England.
Fiamuin’s parents were proud Anglo-Saxons, with little use for the Norman nobility. They had standing in their community due to her father’s profession as the “cart man” (hence the last name of “Kareman”) and her mother’s abilities as a Wise Woman. Fiamuin and her siblings were raised in the outdoors, generally considered as Pagan and not part of the Catholic church, learning the ways of the Anglo-Saxons, and teachings from their mother.
Fiamuin first married Mark, but he left her a widow less than a year after marriage. She married again within a few years to Robert, but he also left her a widow after going off to the Crusades and never returning. After her second marriage, Fiamuin devoted herself to her mother’s profession, and became a Wise Woman herself – a healer, herbalist, midwife, and sometimes called a witch.
